Little room revisited...

Ahhhhhhh....that's a sigh of relief. We are finally done with this weird little room and I'm really happy about that. Please excuse the wonky shot above (everything looks a little crooked...well, maybe it is?). There are plenty of before photos here, but check out the shot below...

DIY renovation
...and after, taken from the same angle. We still need to fix some trim around the door (oh, and sheetrock the rest of the living room). The black blob on the floor is Show Dog.

An old picnic bench is working well as a low bookshelf. As you can see, my magazine obsession knows no bounds...

I love the late-afternoon, copper-colored light in this room.

One more before image, including textured walls, fake wood paneling, 1970's brick, and a saw thrown in for good measure...

DIY renovation
   and after! Yay!!!

Excellent !

The result is clearer, wider, I like it very much !

How did you do to hide the hole in the floor ?

Looks fantastic!! Nice reward for all your hard work. I love the art above the hearth - can you share details? Thanks!

Thanks, everyone!

@Hélène- what looks like a hole, is actually black foam from old carpeting.

@Karen- oops! The painting above the hearth is by our friend, Jim Delucia. He's based in Rochester, NY, but his work is on display at the Tioga County Council on the Arts in Owego, NY until Thursday this week. :) We went to undergrad together and would often trade work.

What a transformation! It looks amazing. I love the little horse and art work above the hearth.

It's beautiful. The staircase is magical.
I can't tell what you did with the ceiling light. Is it the same?

Thanks! :)

@elise- there is a weird fixture on the ceiling. It isn't a light, but I have no idea what it actually is. We left it there only because we're planning to take down the ceiling in the summer (no fun).

Loving this! It looks so fresh! What is the shade of white paint that you used? (Sorry if you've mentioned it already!)

Happy Monday!

Well done! It looks great and I love the bench idea for magazine (I have the same addiction....) We are renovating too so I feel very inspired after seeing your before and after shots. Thanks, Shelley www.motheroeuf.blogspot.com

What an amazing transformation! It looked so small and narrow before. Opening up the staircase and painting everything white makes it look so much larger. Yet it is still a cute, cozy nook. Love it!

I love how the clean white mantle adds a really nice modern touch to the space.

You guys are miracle workers! That stairway transformation made the whole room appear lighter and bigger! Might switch things up in my living room and try the old bench as a book shelf trick too!

Ah, so bright and fresh and open...what a lovely place to warm your toes (and read back mag issues) on a cold day!

Do you have a post detailing the opening of the staircase? I'm sincerely interested in opening mine up (viewable from my dining room), and recently started researching the project. Thanks!

You need to add a little chimney to your play house on the bench because then the "a's..." going up on the back of that book will look like they are coming out the chimney! My eyes see things a little weirdly. Great job on your room

This is wonderful. It looks like a great place to curl up with a book or board game.

This turned out fantastic! I love how clean cut it looks, which does really let the light glow beautifully. It's been fun to see the progress.

It looks so much sunnier in there now, I love it. I keep showing my husband pictures of this stair-entry room remodel hoping it will inspire him to open up our stairwell some weeknight too.

How did you refinish the floor? I have a floor with similar issues, and could only hope to get such a nice result.

Paulette said...

This is really beautiful A. I love how it is such an unexpected "moment" in the house. And it's perfectly balanced with just enough in it to make it warm but not so much that the room can't breathe. p.s. We may need to start going to magazines anonymous together! :-)

Looks very cozy, how do you think it will be used? Will you actually sit at that desk and work?

Thanks so much, everyone! Too sweet!

@Mel- I didn't ever write a post with many details. Opening the staircase was kind of a mess (see this post: http://aestheticoutburst.blogspot.com/2011/11/uh-oh.html), but did make a huge difference.

@compcat- here's a post I wrote about our experience refinishing the floors: http://aestheticoutburst.blogspot.com/2012/05/refinishing-hardwood-floors.html

@Nicky- yup- we use the space every day. That's the desk where I work. :)
