Apples...

Lately I've really been trying to make more of an effort to put things in perspective and remind myself how lucky we are. These photos are from last year, a few weeks before we bought this place. As a result of this snow, there won't be any cider-making this year. Last year, we pressed 500 pounds of apples- this year, we've literally only found one apple on all of our trees so far. We're disappointed, but when put in perspective (the flood just nine months ago, raging fires in Colorado, etc), we feel lucky. This article talks about the damage to the New York State apple crop, and the devastation NYS farmers are facing this year. Wow.

I've been thinking about apples lately and all the farmers who have lost their crops and all the folks who enjoy local affordable apples. Apples are such a staple to many North American diets that it makes me wonder what will happen this autumn and winter. What will we substitute and how much will it cost? I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your crop.
