The living room revisited...

Our living room is still very much a work-in-progress and, with two kids under five, will be for a while, but it's starting to feel like a better fit. The previous incarnation was a little too red and overwhelming, so I snagged this yellow couch (which I'll eventually reupholster), we ditched the 70's orange couch and, after one-two-many spills, I dragged this rug out of the dining room. It's getting better (the living room that is. Not the rug). Let's take a look around. As far as artwork goes, this collage is by PRH. The wooden horse? Well, you may recall the post about my propping habit...

The artwork on this wall is by: me (top right), me (midle right), my mom's department store credit card from the 1970's, Sara Pedigo (painting), Jake Bloomer (bottom), and Kris Merola (top left). We're lucky to have so many friends who are artists.

Here's that credit card I was talking about. Locals will remember Burt's department store on the Avenue in Endicott. I love that it says 'Mrs Joseph Ortu' instead of my mom's name. And yes, Ortu is my maiden name.

I made this little painting and couldn't resist the color palette in that Birds book. These sit next to a beautiful painting by our friend Marcie Paper...

Our coffee table is a chicken coop that was in my childhood family living room. It's one of those pieces that my brothers and I are nostalgic about and have traded back and forth for years, much to the chagrin of our respective partners. It does have a piece of glass, but EZ E and Kicky kept sitting on it and I was worried that they'd kill themselves.

Playdoh moon piece made (and repaired) by EZ E...

Here's the living room as seen from the dining room. As you can see, we need to fix the trim around the door. We're replacing walls throughout the house and the living room is next on that list. I've needed some time to recover from this plaster dust mess.

my beloved fake plant in a hand-drawn pot. Don't judge.

Here's the other side of the room that's waiting patiently for a bookshelf. Our 1980's television sits on that credenza. A few years ago, snarky Apartment Therapy commenters almost embarrassed me into buying a new one, but it still works great (even after getting wet by accident)! The 1980's television stays, but refuses to ever be seen by the general public again.

and a shot from the stairs. Let's see how long this arrangement lasts, shall we?

I think it looks great! It looks way better than our living room, that's for sure! You've got a great touch for arrangement, and that is critical!

I think its all amazing, that carpet is incredible! I just purchased a smaller textile rug from the markets in guatemala. It still even smells like the house it was handmade in!

I love it! Nice job with the furniture arrangement. I also love how you repurposed the coop into a coffee table. Can't wait to see more! :)

I LOVE how everything looks. Glad you kept the TV. We have a huge 80's TV also, it stays until it dies! I look at it this way, by the time it does die, the TV that I want will be so very affordable. Karen from CT

Oh my goodness, Burt's! My mom ran a frame shop in the old Burt's building, and a couple of years after they closed the owners sold the building. One afternoon the new owners came downstairs and told us we could go up into the storage area and take anything we wanted because they were going to throw it all out. It was full of office supplies! I used Burt's notebooks all through high school. :) I only wish I'd have known how much I'd treasure all of it now, I'd have held on to at least a few.

I love Apartment Therapy but many comments make me cringe. I despise the self-righteous attitude that can be rampant over there. We just got rid of our old CRT TV but I also got many comments from friends about how hideous and old it was. Oh well!

Anyway, your room is gorgeous. As always. :)

The living room looks great. Is it wrong that my favorite shot was the one that revealed that you too love Living, Etc.? :-) Can't wait to come visit A!

I love all of the vertical lines! Echoed from the rug, the chicken coop coffee table, the radiator, and the stand with the lamp! SO pretty and my favorite mix of colors and textures with a bit of pink thrown in.

I love getting to see your farmhouse become home!

Love this arrangement. All the better to watch the monkeys on the couch while we sit in the kitchen with our wine. And our lovely mouse.
