My five favorite things from around blogland recently.

wrapped1. Beautifully wrapped gifts from Time of the Aquarius (found via Suann Song).

2. The walls of this room from The Marion House Book (photo by Kristin Sjaarda). Every room in that house made me swoon.

Lady lumberjacks...

exterior renovation
exterior renovation
Speaking of before and afters, let's talk about exterior projects for a minute. The bottom photo was taken before we bought the house and I took the top photo last week. I found the before photo the other day and was surprised by how different the exterior of the house looks. Granted, these were taken in completely different seasons (top in Fall and bottom in Spring), but we've made it a point to spend nice days outside cleaning up our overgrown yard and I'm happy that it's starting to show. While PRH is at work and EZ E's at school, Kicky and I are a pair of handsaw-wielding ladies! OK, so maybe I don't really let our 2-year-old use a handsaw, but you get the gist...we trim plants while the boys are gone. We actually need to head outside to clear up a dead pine tree we cut down yesterday. Hmmmm...maybe after I search for matching mother/daughter lumberjack outfits?

The first look...

renovation

I know I've told this story before, but the first time we looked at our house it was revolting. The smell of mold and rodents was so strong at the door that I almost didn't go in. Curiosity got the best of me though, and we tip toed along a narrow path to see the interior. Stuff was piled everywhere and I didn't even bother taking photos because I thought, "There's no way in hell we're going to buy this place". Ha! Unbeknownst to us, my cousin and her husband also looked at the farmhouse and they took photos! Obviously, they decided against buying it, but she sent the photos to me the other day. This is actually a bit cleaned up compared to the first time we saw it. The dining room/kitchen above and the studio below...

Can you believe that?! Thanks for the photos, Ally!

This weekend...

I forgot to mention yesterday that we received an unexpected visit from Captain America*. I'm going to go enjoy our time with him. Have a happy weekend, everyone!

*I've been photographing EZ E in all of his costumes and plan to make a little book. The results are pretty hilarious so far.*

Happy Thanksgiving...

drawing
With the exception of Christmas, the morning of every holiday is insane at our house. By the time we walk out the door to attend multiple family dinners, I'm already irritated and covered in some kind of sauce that spilled on me right as we were walking out the door. By the time the passive aggressive comments are being lobbed back and forth, I'm completely done. This year, I was determined not to race around preparing food or ironing clothing or giving baths. I poured myself a giant glass of wine last night (Apothic Red, to be exact), put on The Strokes really loud, and busted out our holiday dishes. I also ironed all of our clothing, made lunch and dinner for Friday, and may or may not have danced until I almost sweat to death. Friends, it got pretty ugly. But you know what? This morning is fabulous. Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. I'm a big fan of leaning. I love how the giant print is sitting on the floor in this photo from House and Home (found via The Belvedere).

    2. A super easy DIY idea to keep the kiddos occupied at Thanksgiving? From Martha Stewart (found via Sandi Devenny). How is it that this is the only colorful thing on the list this week?

From B...

EZ E's pre-school, the same school that I went to as a child, was just one of the many buildings damaged by the flood in Owego. This year, the first day of class was cut short as rain waters wiped out roads and utilities throughout our little town. In addition to losing their furnace and electrical system, EZ E's school lost desks, chairs, toys, books, etc. When the wonderful folks at B. toys heard about the flood and how it had affected EZ E's school, they sent along a beautiful package of toys! Coincidentally, the package from B. toys arrived the Saturday before the kids were scheduled to return to their school for the first time in 3 months. The excitement was palpable!

B. toys had already earned a special spot in my heart; our kiddos love their toys (here and here) and I love their philosophy. However, there's something extra special about a toy company that's genuinely thoughtful and reaches out to a little school in need. EZ E was thrilled to bring the toys to school and his school was thrilled with the gift. Thank you, B.

btoysYou can imagine the conversation that happened below:
EZ E: Those toys aren't for you! They're for my school!
Kicky: No. MY toys!
EZ E: Mommy? Mommy!
Kicky (as she runs away with lovely toys in hand): Mommy! No. Mine toys!

Kitchen in progress...

farmhouse renovations
Last week on twitter I mentioned that I was considering showing photos of our kitchen. I started to write the post and then I chickened out! The kitchen's still very much in progress but, after thinking about it a bit (and after a little tweet from Lynn), I realized I was being absolutely ridiculous. As I've said before, there are always going to be varying opinions about the way a house is decorated, but at the end of the day, this is what works best for our family. We've lived here less than 4 months and it's come a long way from the hot flipping mess we started with (above). Below is what 1/2 of our kitchen looked like yesterday. Full disclosure: there's usually a sink full of dirty dishes and the crockpot isn't usually on the counter:

renovationPRH and I refinished the floors throughout the entire house. The kitchen and dining room are really just one big room, which is more obvious in these photos. There are 4 different types of wood on the first floor alone, so we stained everything to match the kitchen floors, which are the darkest. Below you can see the dining room floors on the left and the kitchen floors on the right. I love, love, love having hardwood floors in our kitchen.

renovationWe both cook a lot, so we really want to take our time to figure out how the room does and doesn't work before we make any drastic changes. The cabinets were built by the previous owners and are built like a brick...well, let's just say they were built to last. I painted the lower cabinets in Valspar's Forest Canopy Green and swapped out the old hardware for brass Bedford pulls and knobs by Martha Stewart for Home Depot. We left the upper cabinets white to sort of blend with the walls. I'm only showing half the room because we chopped up one side of the upper cabinets and it's a total wreck. I waffle between getting rid of the upper cabinets altogether or just changing the style. Please weigh in here: do you prefer upper cabinets or no upper cabinets?

renovationWe found the "island" in the barn; it was the previous owner's woodshop work bench. PRH hauled it out of the barn, cleaned it, sanded it, and coated it with food grade mineral oil. It may be a little wobbly on top, but it's the perfect height and works great for now. PRH is itching to have it back out in the barn. We keep fizzy water, veggies, and the kids' drawing materials on the bottom (the old picnic basket is full of construction paper and coloring books).

You can sort of see where we've chopped the upper cabinets (far right). The backsplash, if I can even call it that, is actually two layers of super old linoleum that's tacked (yes, with thumb tacks) to the original plaster/lathe walls. My parents gave us a lovely gas stove to replace that electric beast, so we may tackle the backsplash situation when we replace the stove. Deep breaths, PRH.

renovationAhhh...the green countertops. For as old as they are they're in good shape, and they've grown on me. We need to figure out what to do with the cabinets before we make any decisions about the countertops.

The light between the windows isn't original. The bathroom in our Buffalo apartment had similar fixtures (including chrome-topped bulbs) and I always liked how simple they were. We wanted something to blend a bit, so my parents gave us this light fixture that they had kicking around in their barn. Yay! Thanks, Mom and Dad!

renovationSo, that's 1/2 of our kitchen tour for now. Like I said, it is a work in progress, but I promise to be less anxious about showing our progress. Thanks for the push, Lynn!

Thank you to Circle & Sprout for sponsoring today's post.

This weekend...

drawing
What are we up to this weekend? Well, I was trolling through our flat files and found a huge stash of original drawings that I made a few years ago. I've been putting them all in my shop and plan to continue that this weekend. We're also knee-deep into the "library" renovation. The wall is completely down and a new 1/2 wall is about to be put in place. The rest of the walls in that room should be up by the end of the day, and then tomorrow will be dedicated to taping and mudding that room and the mudroom. Yipppeeeeee! Happy weekend, everyone! See you on Monday.

Coloring...

drawing
As a child, I had a babysitter who let us draw all over her basement walls. The walls and ceiling were absolutely covered with drawings from all of the kids she'd watched over the years. I remember thinking, "We can draw on your walls?! What?!?!". Each day I'd draw and draw and draw, and I really think that kind of creative freedom was one of the reasons I wanted to be an artist. Yesterday, on a whim, I let EZ E and Kicky draw all over the walls of their bedroom. It was awesome to see them both so engrossed in making something. We drew for two hours. Two whole hours! Note the kind of gross Gary Baseman screenprint hanging above EZ E's bed...he picked it out from a stash of posters we have and wanted it hung right above his bed. I digress. Here they are at the beginning, both a little tentative...

drawingWe were all pretty thrilled with the results. Eventually, we're planning to remodel the 2nd floor and will probably end up covering their work, but they're officially allowed to color on the walls in their bedroom until then. Oh, and so is mommy.

Shiny alphabet...

alphabet craft
We've been making a lot of projects with pipe cleaners at our house lately. We've also been practicing the alphabet, so why not combine the two? EZ E helped make all of the letters and has been carefully organizing them on the table. We didn't cut any of the pipe cleaners, just folded until we made a letter. Wouldn't these make cute gift toppers? Or look cute on a tree?

On stands now...

holiday crafts
I made a few projects for the most recent (December 2011) issue of Parents Magazine and thought I'd share a quick look. The spirograph wreath was my favorite project. You could easily change the color of the yarn or the pattern to make an entirely different wreath. The whole slideshow and all of the project instructions are here. The issue is on stands now!

Uh oh...

renovation
6 PM on a Sunday night (last night, to be exact). Here's how the conversation went:
  • Abbey: I can't stand that our living room is L-shaped. Doesn't it seem like shelves would look weird? Couldn't we take out the wall to the stairs and kind of open it up a bit?
  • PRH: It would make the room look bigger. I think we could take out that wall. Hmmmm...I wonder how it's constructed.
  • Abbey: Couldn't you just take out a little chunk of the wall and look down in?
  • PRH: Yeah, that wouldn't be too hard. Let me go get a screwdriver.
PRH returning with a screwdriver and crowbar should've clued me in. It didn't.

End of conversation, beginning of loud banging sounds. Goodbye, gross textured wall. Hello, slightly bigger library project.
