Carved polymer beads tutorial...

As promised, I put together a tutorial for carving polymer clay. Be very careful with the exacto blade and let me know if you have any questions! This tutorial is for personal use only, peeps: make it for youself, make it for your mom...please don't make it to sell.

Materials
1 small package of Fimo Clay (will make 8 medium-sized beads)
exacto knife with a sharp blade
    wooden skewer
bead tutorialInstructions
    1. Break off a small piece of the clay and knead until it’s pliable. The size depends on the bead size you’d like to make, but plan for a little bit bigger than the final bead you'd like, as you'll be shaving off some of the clay.
    2. Roll the clay into a ball (I flattened mine slightly).

bead tutorial
    3. Carefully twist the wooden skewer into the clay from one side until you can see it poking through. Remove the skewer and poke into the hole from the opposite side. This will make your holes cleaner and help prevent rough edges.

bead tutorial
    4. If the holes do have rough edges, just use your finger to smooth them out.

bead tutorial
    5. Repeat steps as necessary for any additional beads.
    6. Place a sheet of parchment on a cookie sheet and carefully set your beads on the parchment.
    7. Following the directions on the package, bake your beads.
    8. Allow your beads to cool.
    9. Once cooled, use your exacto knife to carve into the clay, shaving away small sections at a time. You may want to use a self-healing mat underneath your work area. With the black clay, the knife will create striations going in the same direction as your blade. Change the direction of your cuts in order to change the striations. I didn't experience this with any of the other clay colors.

    10. Thread your beads onto a necklace or piece of string. I used a sterling silver ball chain, but you can use whatever you’d like.
    11. Rock that necklace, baby!

Soap box...

I've written and rewritten this post too many times to count. When it comes to politics, religion, or any other controversial issues, I keep relatively quiet on Aesthetic Outburst. While I have very clear opinions about these subjects in my personal life, I make it a point to avoid controversy on my blog. Many of you have probably heard about the latest Urban Outfitters debacle. If you haven't, please check out the back story here, here, or here. As an artist, blogger, and and as a supporter of independent artists, I felt it was important to stand up and yell about this issue a bit.

Artists can (and often do) come up with similar ideas, independently of one another. Just this weekend, I was looking at Pinterest and happened to see this lovely print by Jaime Derringer of Design Milk. I've been making a similar pattern without ever having seen Jaime's print...a genuine mistake on my part to not research the pattern better. I didn't intend to copy Jaime and was genuinely mortified when I realized that I had been drawing the same pattern. With regard to the current U.O. situation, it's very clear that several artists have been making very similar work (see this post on Regretsy). Who came up with the necklace design first? I'll admit that those waters are pretty murky.

Here's the thing though: this isn't the first time an independent artist has cried foul. Urban Outfitters and Cody Foster & Co have repeatedly been accused of stealing ideas from independent artists (people like you and me!) and are making a profit from these stolen ideas. Do I really need to say this out loud?! Making a profit from stolen work is not OK.

My dear friend, Renee Garner, has written about this very issue here and here, and I think that Jan and Earl from Poppytalk wrote a really thoughtful response to this particular situation. I'm done yelling, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this issue.

UPDATE:
Abby from abby try again wrote a really interesting post about this topic and Renee wrote a post about this specific case

This weekend...

pink elephant
We were planning to put a roof on the farmhouse this weekend, but that has to wait (long story). It's kind of a good thing because EZ E's 4th birthday is next week. Can you believe that? This seems like yesterday and now he's 4. Our local fair, the Fireman's Field Days, starts on Wednesday (the fairgrounds are directly behind our house) and EZ E is absolutely thrilled. He's convinced that the fair is coming for his birthday...why argue? Last year was really fun; it was like a giant party descending on our little neighborhood. All of the neighbors were out in their yards and our family came to watch the fireworks with us. We're looking forward to that again this year. I hope you all have a great weekend and I'll see you on Monday!

20 handmade projects in 20 days...day 20 (the last day). Remember the arm cuffs from EZ E's 'Mister E' costume? I thought it would be fun to make a new pair for 20 in 20. Why am I modeling them? Two reasons:
    1. reluctant models
    2. a grown-up modeling arm cuffs just may be the push you need to join your local roller derby team. A costume was all you were waiting for, right?
That's what I thought. Thanks to Madame Hervé for sponsoring today's project. Happy 20 in 20!

Elsewhere...

felt crown
It's been a busy and exciting month here in the A.O. house! Here's where we've been recently:
  • PRH and I did a really fun interview together on the lovely blog, A Beautiful Party. That was actually where we first spilled the news about the farmhouse.

  • Elle Decor invited me to participate in their "Design Insider" series!

  • Elsie and Jeremy got married, so I was a guest blogger on A Beautiful Mess. DIY domino tutorial, anyone?

  • Rachael and I have been excited to see our collaborative stationery line on pushing papers, Poppytalk, and design*sponge!

  • I did an interview (and revealed some little known 'Abbey facts') at yellow bird yellow beard.

  • My work is in Julia Rothman's latest book, Drawn In: A Peek into the Inspiring Sketchbooks of 44 Fine Artists, Illustrators, Graphic Designers, and Cartoonist. You can pick up a copy here.
We have some really exciting projects in the works (that I'm dying to tell you about). Stay tuned! Btw, the photo above is an outtake from this photo shoot.

20 handmade projects in 20 days...day 19. I'm a broken record. Yes, more carved polymer clay and, yes, another necklace. Oh, and, yes, another geometric shape. We're even keeping it simple with one photo today, peeps. Simplicity is where it's at. Thanks to reworked for sponsoring today's project. Happy 20 in 20!

20 handmade projects in 20 days...day 18. While making this project, I imagined a lovely brunch with a table full of fresh fruit, pure maple syrup, homemade Belgian waffles, and fountains of tasty mimosas in front of each place setting. I'd be the one at brunch with my head under the mimosa fountain (my friends are laughing right now because they've seen it happen). Thanks to founders & followers for sponsoring today's project. A crafting era...

I've made a craft project every single weekday since December*. At the end of this month, I'll have given away 80 projects that I personally made. 80 handmade projects. Phew! :) I've had SO much fun working on my 20 in 20 project (see all of the projects here) and have met so many interesting people as a result. For that, in particular, I am incredibly thankful. After much consideration, I've decided to take a break from 20 in 20 at the end of this month. I'll still be posting every day and sharing the occasional tutorial and giveaway, but I'm going to need time to focus on the farmhouse renovations, a few freelance projects, my shop, and to finish writing a book proposal that I've been working on forever. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you all for your comments and support! I'm looking forward to what's next and hope you'll keep visiting Aesthetic Outburst to find out.

Farmhouse news...

Remember this whiney rant that I posted back in March? You may even remember how it all started. Well, today I can *finally* share the rest of the story.

farmhouse renovations
After seemingly losing out on the farmhouse of our dreams to a cash buyer, PRH and I talked it over and decided that we weren't going to take no for an answer. This was a forever kind of house and we really wanted it. I come from a long line of rather determined women, so I spoke with our agent again, made it very clear that we would put an offer in on the house, and we waited. The next day, same thing. The next day...a phone call from our agent, saying that the negotiations on the cash deal had stalled and asking if we could meet him at the house to do another walk-through. Score! We did the walk-through, made an offer, and it was accepted that afternoon. That was in March. Yes, March! I won't go into the gory details of the mortgage process just yet (we're still in the process & are expecting to close within the next couple of weeks), but let me just say that buying a 150-year-old abandoned farmhouse has not been easy. That, however, is a story for a different day.

Here we are standing outside the farmhouse, thinking about heaps of mouse poop, dead birds, faux brick, avocado-colored walls, gold-veined mirrors glued to nearly every wall, an old roof, a horrifying kitchen, disgusting bathrooms, and ruined hardwood floors. We look pretty happy about it, don't we?

Here we are on the first day of renovations this past weekend...still happy, but also a little bit terrified...

renovations with crazy hair and eyebrows in need of attention...

renovations
This is what it looks like when your dreams are beginning to come true. Your hair is going to be frizzy and your eyebrows are going to be a mess, but you're going to have a smile on your face under that dust mask. And you're going to write about it.

handmade necklace
20 handmade projects in 20 days...day 16. Yes, more carved Fimo clay. Not to get all 'arty science experiment' on you, but the off-white clay behaved completely different from the black. Very interesting (you may not have noticed, but that was just me pretending to be Velma Dinkley). I shot the photos for the fimo carving tutorial this weekend, btw. Coming soon! I also thought the white beads looked better on a cord instead of chain, so cord it is. Thanks to Kristen Merola photography & artists' books for sponsoring today's project. Happy 20 in 20!

This weekend...

gold bird
It was kind of an insane week, so I'm looking forward to two days to catch back up. We're not going anywhere and I'm really happy about that. EZ E's 4th birthday (gah!) is coming up in a couple of weeks and we're building him a playhouse. I'd like to get started planning that (I'm going to hang this little bird above the doorway). What are you doing this weekend? Any fun plans? Have a great time and I'll see you on Monday!

For Kicks...

Thank you Old Navy for sponsoring my post today about baby and toddler styles. Old Navy is giving you 30% off everything in their baby and toddler summer collection, plus get an additional 15% off in-store.

With two babies under the age of four, I have a few tricks up my sleeve for keeping them looking cute on a not-so-cute budget. Today, I thought I'd share a few with you. Here we go!

carrot boutonniere
  • When I find something on sale that I really like, not only do I buy the size our kiddos need, but I buy several larger sizes as well. I love the shirt that EZ E's wearing (above and below) and it was on sale, so I bought it in two sizes and two color-ways. The same with Kicky's sweater. Storage is the key here. We have a couple of totes for each babe with labels like 'Kicky 3T' or 'EZ E 5T' and I immediately stash bigger sizes in the totes when we get home. At each size change, I make a tally of what they already have and fill in clothing gaps as needed.

  • kids birthday

  • I buy unisex for EZ E whenever possible. Navy blue converse one-stars that he wore for just a few weeks? They'll be perfect for Kicky in a about a year. Those super cute red boots that he loved? Now she loves them!

  • Accessorize! 'Put a bow on it' is my version of Portlandia's 'put a bird on it'. This hat belonged to EZ E and ended up looking really cute on Kicky when I put a gigantic bow on it.

  • What? She wants to wear her brother's underwear over her black pants again? He wants to wear vintage glasses everywhere? She wants to wear his beloved glasses (and he doesn't care)? Let them dress themselves and have a sense of humor! It's friendlier on your wallet and no one cares if your baby is wearing weird glasses from the 1960's. In the grand scheme of life, it isn't a big deal. Oh, and a note to future Abbey: green hair won't be a big deal either.

vintage glasses
So now I want to hear...what are your tricks? Do share!

I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.
