The first look...

I know I've told this story before, but the first time we looked at our house it was revolting. The smell of mold and rodents was so strong at the door that I almost didn't go in. Curiosity got the best of me though, and we tip toed along a narrow path to see the interior. Stuff was piled everywhere and I didn't even bother taking photos because I thought, "There's no way in hell we're going to buy this place". Ha! Unbeknownst to us, my cousin and her husband also looked at the farmhouse and they took photos! Obviously, they decided against buying it, but she sent the photos to me the other day. This is actually a bit cleaned up compared to the first time we saw it. The dining room/kitchen above and the studio below...

renovationBelow is a 'before' shot of our bedroom. I still have to take a decent 'after' shot, but this is what the entire house looked like when we saw it...

Can you believe that?! Thanks for the photos, Ally!

impressive! your vision (and patience) is inspiring. Can you provide a source for the rug in blue and grey tones?

It takes vision to see beyond all those boxes! I can't imagine the smell of rodent and mold that greeted you (not that I want to). Good for you for transforming it into such a beautiful and CLEAN looking space!!

Wow! You've come a long way. It's so lovely what you've done.

that is really fantastic and awesome. i have a question that is totally unrelated to your post except that your "after" pics made me think of it. when you paint the walls and trim white, do you use the same paint, or do you use a higher gloss paint for the trim?

Isn't it amazing what you see when you are house hunting? We saw one place with boxes just like that and above the master bed they had pregnancy casts (Think paper mache of bellies) for each of their 4 kids. oye.

Thanks so much, everyone! This post was a nice reminder to myself that everything's coming along OK. :) It's easy to get bogged down by the giant 'to do' list.

Bridget- the rug is from a local store called Nasco, but there wasn't a label on it. I have no idea what brand it is- I wish I did because I'd pick up another one! :)

Marisa- We sprayed the entire interior with flat Behr Ultra Bright White (walls, ceilings, trim) and then went back in with Behr high gloss trim paint for the trim. It definitely made a difference.

Brianne- that sounds SO bizarre! Ha!

xo,
Abbey

That is amazing. Your dining room just looks so inviting. I've been following the blog for awhile now and am so inspired. My husband and I are building house right now, and it is great to see someone else's progress several steps ahead!

Abbey....Amazing as usual! What kind of paint did you use on the floor in your studio?

Whatever you did, it worked. Your home is beautiful!

Thanks, Jen. The paint is Valspar porch + floor paint and the color is Ebony Field. It's held up well in the studio, but not so great on the stairs. We didn't coat it though, so it's my own fault. :)
