He smoked a pipe and she sold Avon in the 1970's. That's a pretty accurate description of the smell of the weird room/closet off of our 2nd floor bathroom (which is a complete horror show in and of itself). We spent yesterday cleaning the room, peeling off layers of mildewed wallpaper, and painting walls. Here's what it looked like the day we bought the house. We literally tore out the green carpet a few minutes after we walked in the door. That black trim along the top? Electrical tape. Yeah, I'm not sure why either. The wallpaper was covered in mold and in terrible condition, so it simply had to go.

Too bad that wallpaper was shot, the design is great! Best wishes for your continued phases ... :)
such a shame about the mold on the wallpaper. it's a great print. but there is no redeeming quality about the green carpet... my apologies to green carpets everywhere.

Ok, I might have to use your line "He smoked a pipe and she sold Avon" as lyrics someday. If you don't mind that is...

P.S. The flower wallpaper you discovered is really beautiful actually.
ugh I can smell the avon smell in my memory right now! my Mammie has the coolest avon perfume bottle collection but good Lord that smell is forever!
Just a little note to say that I have been following your blog for a while, but never commented. I am living vicariously through your farmhouse adventure, and was tickled to see your dining room over on designsponge today.
I am so enjoying you adventures with the house. Checking for updates everyday. Reminds me of growing up in Ohio, grandparents farms, uncovering treasure. I am really excited what you find in the barn.
