Farmhouse news...

Remember this whiney rant that I posted back in March? You may even remember how it all started. Well, today I can *finally* share the rest of the story.

farmhouse renovations
After seemingly losing out on the farmhouse of our dreams to a cash buyer, PRH and I talked it over and decided that we weren't going to take no for an answer. This was a forever kind of house and we really wanted it. I come from a long line of rather determined women, so I spoke with our agent again, made it very clear that we would put an offer in on the house, and we waited. The next day, same thing. The next day...a phone call from our agent, saying that the negotiations on the cash deal had stalled and asking if we could meet him at the house to do another walk-through. Score! We did the walk-through, made an offer, and it was accepted that afternoon. That was in March. Yes, March! I won't go into the gory details of the mortgage process just yet (we're still in the process & are expecting to close within the next couple of weeks), but let me just say that buying a 150-year-old abandoned farmhouse has not been easy. That, however, is a story for a different day.

Here we are standing outside the farmhouse, thinking about heaps of mouse poop, dead birds, faux brick, avocado-colored walls, gold-veined mirrors glued to nearly every wall, an old roof, a horrifying kitchen, disgusting bathrooms, and ruined hardwood floors. We look pretty happy about it, don't we?

Here we are on the first day of renovations this past weekend...still happy, but also a little bit terrified...

renovations with crazy hair and eyebrows in need of attention...

renovations
This is what it looks like when your dreams are beginning to come true. Your hair is going to be frizzy and your eyebrows are going to be a mess, but you're going to have a smile on your face under that dust mask. And you're going to write about it.

Wonderful, wonderful! You're going to have so much fun, a bit of sorrow (we had at least), and a good glass of wine during mild summer evenings on that beautiful porch too!
Congratulations and good luck turning this into a stunning home, which I'm sure you will succeed in.

Congratulations! I am oh so envious of that porch! I have a question though. How is it that you are already on the property and starting the clean up when you haven't legally taken ownership? When we bought our home last year, the previous owner wouldn't even let us back in to measure the windows! I can't wait to follow your progress. Hoping you document and post every project!

Karyn said...

yeah!! that's so fantastic. i love that you two are just going to go for it.

Thank you all SO much for your sweet comments! We'll definitely keep everyone updated about renovations here. In answer to the question, "How is it that you are already on the property and starting the clean up when you haven't legally taken ownership?":
it's a stipulation of the mortgage. The owner lives several hours away, so we agreed to do most of the work so the house will pass inspection. We're running into a few issues, but are hopeful that it gets resolved. :) Will keep you all posted!
x,
Abbey
