For Kicks...

kids clothing
PRH teaches at a university in a small town in Pennsylvania. One day last month we all rode down for a visit and while we were waiting for PRH to finish class, the kids and I grabbed lunch at a local establishment. There was a group of women one table over who kept eyeing us (and yes, my babies were actually behaving at a restaurant for a change). Finally, one of the women approached me and said, "You aren't from around here, are you?" (not a great way to start a friendly conversation). I said, "No, we're not. How could you tell?". The woman pointed at Kicky and said, "Her coat. We don't have nice things like that around here.". Then she just walked back to her table and sat down. Don't you think that's a weird thing to say? Kicky's coat is from Old Navy, btw.

Wow, what a comment. I can always think of a million things to say after someone walks away. What did you want to say back to her???

I went to Pennsylvania a couple of times and had some strange questions asked like that to me, too. Oh well, at least she said the coat was nice and not that the coat was disgusting or something. :P

That's so weird. Ugh. Small town remarks and comments are like no other!

Which reminds me of this one- I was going to pick up a swinging rattan chair that I scored on craigslist & the guy, in a very slow drawl, says "my van is maroon. i don't know if you've ever heard of maroon, but it's like a deep red color." Like he was telling me something I'd never heard. When I got there he was impressed that I found his maroon van so quickly because it was "kind of a unique color."

Wow, youre right-not a very nice comment to say to someone first hand. She could have at least smiled and said "what an adorable coat she has on."
And remember(Samantha), its not just in PA that people can be rude. It happens everywhere.:) We live close to you Abbey, right on the NY/PA border and there are small towns everywhere. Its too bad when people have to act weird but it sounds like you didnt let it get the best of you.
Anyway, kicky looks adorable. I want her coat for me!:)
XO,
Sarah

I live in one of those small, Pennsylvania university towns. While I did not grow up here, and apparently have better manners, I can understand where that woman is coming from. Unless one lives in Pittsburgh or Philly, there are no stores in this state (except Walmart). We do get a little testy about this.

That is a SUPER weird thing to say....but you do have great taste :)
The great thing about Old Navy and the Gap is unless you are aware of it you really can't tell stuff is from there if you pair it with other stuff not from there :)

Some women are so threatened and... WEIRD.

You guys must have all looked DANG hot!

I don't understand. That was a compliment.
I cannot see how that was a rude comment, testy or strange.
The women were obviously very taken with her adorable coat. I grew up in the boonies where all of the girls growing up thought that The Express and Limited were "it". It was gaggingly predicatble to see them show up to school in the exact outfits that they had displayed on the mannequins because they didn't have enough creativity to put their own ensembles together. I was the "weird" dresser-the one that pulled things together from shopping trips to the nearest big city but mainly from the thrift stores. I would've considered her comment the ultimate compliment! My best friend & I knew it'd been a successful day if our eclectic outfits were the talk at the local grocery store BEFORE school was even out!
I couldn't wait to escape that small town. Funny thing is, I'd love to go back now for the farmhouse, massive quantities of acreage & a barn... and I'd still love to shock the socks off of the locals with my "weird" outfits!

I don't know that I thought her comment was rude, but I did think her delivery was odd. :)

Oh, and I didn't say anything back because she walked away too fast. I would've said thank you (?). Oh well. :)

That's a fantastic shot of K made even more hysterical by your labels. The entire post reflects that you must have a great sense of humor! :)

I live in small town PA. I can assure you that I would have only commented on how cute the little one is. ;)

That lady's comment was... weird. Haha.

That is a strange comment - being from PA (but live in Philadelphia) I'm surprised that someone in a college town would say that, especially because they are usually the more "hip" parts of the state!
