Phases...

I showed you one corner of our living room last week, so now here's the other. Every winter I go through a phase where I detest every piece of furniture in our house. That yellow cabinet and that boring rug are the bane of my existence today. We changed around our living room, put away the map, swapped in some new artwork, and tried to tone down the chaotic color palette. Some days I wish I could just start from zero though. New furniture, new house...yes, please. Does this ever happen to you?

All the time. My mom is incapable of throwing anything away so she has figured out the easiest way to deal with it is to send everything my way. I'm in a constant state of purging and de-cluttering, nevermind simply beautifying my home, so I guess have a constant love/hate relationship with my space. Getting there. Apparently my grandmother was legendary for desperately changing everything around, recreating her space.

It's in my blood.

I love the yellow cabinet. I think if you had a rug that wen't with it, you'd really love it.

Your chair looks great there! I feel that way tons, I don't understand people who never change their houses.

Oh my goodness, this happens to me the whole time. We always want what we don't have... eh? These days I take a lot more time making decisions when I buy something so I'm 100% certain I love it, so I'm less likely to go off it in the future.. At the moment, I hate our sofas and dining chairs. Oh and the carpets!

Just to make you feel better, when I saw the pic of your room pop up in my blog list, I loved everything about it and thought it looked perfectly balanced :) The picture, in particular looks lovely in that position.

All the time. We rent and that can be frustrating. Would love to renovate the kitchen and bathroom... Have to keep remembering that it's a much better and bigger house than we had before and to be satisfied with that.

Winter is here and my nesting urge has kicked in big time. Yes, I'm in a cleaning, rearranging, purging stage too. I love your rattan ottoman and the chair too.

All the time. I'm feeling this way about the kids' room at the moment. And my studio.

HOping it will bring forth some sort of genius idea, though, because the part where I win the lotto is still to be written. ha!

Jealous of your chair. It's a beaut!

This started happening to me once I subscribed to home-styling blogs/magazines. While they inspired me to make some practical albeit minor changes to my (rented) space, I find they often cause me to feel *in want*. Inspiration is great, but not when it departs from what one actually has; what is within one's means. The happiest solution is to make the most of what one has (and this does require imagination, just not too much: "flight" does not a home make).
P.S. For what it's worth, I, too, really liked the photos of your living room.

Don't you wish you could throw a furniture swapping party? As an artist who works out of my house, I'm not much of a clothes horse so a clothes swapping party wouldn't work for me, but I totally be into a furniture swapping party!!

haha! yes! i just wrote about this last week, actually.

it gets really bad in january. throughout the rest of the year i can control it by switching small things around. but in january, it's always the worst.

i collect things and keep them in storage till it's time to pull them out again. that's why thrifting is so awesome.

my real life friends think i'm nuts, so it's very reassuring to read that so many of us have this issue.

i think it comes down to being such a visual group.

oh and ps- i can never get over how LONG it takes me to switch things up! it takes hourrrrs.

I will forever be grateful to the blogosphere because that's where I finally learned that I'm not the only one that loves to arrange and rearrange and rearrange and rearrange....
