Far and away...

My plan is to stay as far away from my desk as possible today. EZ E starts preschool next week so we're trying to finish up odds and ends before, in his words, he becomes a big boy (cue sobbing mama). How did (or do) you mark the beginning of each school year? Do you take a photo? Bake a cake? Have a cocktail as the bus pulls away? :)

I remember when my youngest brother was starting school he grabbed hold of my mother's leg and starting crying saying that he didn't want to leave her.
My mom almost broke down and tossed him over her shoulder, sprinting up the hill back to the house, but I grabbed him by the hand and he spent the day in my class.

I believe a cake AND cocktails are called for!

My mom's first day of school tradition was to take the day off from work and deep-clean the house (purge junk, shampoo carpets). When we got home from school the house would be ready for the upcoming months and there would be some great meal for dinner and an apple pie for dessert. We'd all sit around and talk about the day. It wasn't much different from every other day, but it felt more special and intentional.

Enjoy it anyway you can. Before you know it you're a grandma watching your grandkids go off to school as I wrote in my blog

I need a case of Kleenex to wipe my tears. I was just walking my son to kindergarten. I goes by in the blink of an eye. Cherish.

Happy end of summer vacation!

I don't have my own kids, but when we were little, we always had a special outing with mom the day before school started. And we ALWAYS got a haircut.

I cried when each of my kids entered kindergarten! Now my baby is in grade 12 (cue tears) and I spent her first day at school cleaning the house! Some fun, eh? I really like the way Rachael's mom did it! I like to sit and talk with the kids when they come home. I find it's usually later in the evening when they really feel like talking about things. Otherwise all I hear is "it was fine".

Are you familiar with Sarah Jane's blog? Her children began kindergarten and preschool this year; she and her husband planned a specially-themed back to school 'breakfast.' She blogs about it at http://www.sarahjanestudios.com/blog/2010/08/23/green-eggs-and-kindergarten/

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone! I'm sure there are going to be tears.
