Before and...

picnic table
We found this sturdy old picnic table at our local thrift store last weekend. It was painted that horrible picnic table-rusty red, but we've been wanting one and I could totally see potential. One can of black gloss paint and half a can of gold spray paint later...voilĂ ! A (semi-tacky) picnic table for less than $40. PRH doesn't like the gold and I'm not so sure about it either. He wants red and I want to either leave it alone or sand down just that one board and clear-coat it. What do you think?

Congrats on a super thrift store find! I lovie love the black, but I'm not crazy about the gold myself. Personally, if that single board is destined to stand out, I'd sand it and clear coat it :)

sand down & clear coat! i actually thought it was just sanded (couldn't tell it was gold) & loved that idea :]

Ya, ditch the gold... Great project though :)

Love the picnic table. I'm sure you'll have lots of family memories there. I vote for painting that piece black, the rest looks so good that way.

I vote for sand and clear coat as well.

Just found your blog via party perfect and love it!

i also initially thought, the one board was just plain wood, and actually liked that idea very much :-)

OK- sounds like clear coating gets the big vote. Jacqm, that's exactly what PRH said and no, I'm not a Steelers fan. :) That's funny though.

I love it just the way it is, and I really love the chicks and hens in the can, how frugal....Great job.

Hi. Came over via Decor 8.
You have inspired me to think differently about my patio table and benches.(Hubby just sanded it down for a re-varnish project.)
I guess I'm the lone voice liking the gold. And no, I'm not a Steelers fan.

I like this idea with a twist: sand it all and clear coat it and then paint one board black! I just got a free picnic table from a neighbor (no benches, tho, shoot!) and you've inspired me.

awesome idea for a picnic table. i'm not a big fan of the gold. i think kelly or moss green would be great. kind of outdoorsy-like....
