I'm working on one now and have posted some in-progress photos on my blog. It has been a lot of trial and error so far. I've taken it apart a couple times to adjust things and have made a list of things I will do differently next time. But I absolutely love how it's turning out and I'm glad I'm finally repurposing all my old sheets that I love but can't use anymore.
The way I've seen it done is by doing a long continuous braid, and then when you go back twisting it into a big circle (or oval, whatever) then you sew the braid together with a strong yarn or twine.Hard to explain, but you sew through the braid loop over & over until it all stays together in your rug shape. That's why rugs often look sort of like a snail shell, with a spiral out from the center (the one end of your braid) and then around & around until you run out of braid.Okay, hope I explained that well enough.... :D
Oooooo! Thanks for sharing! I'm going to give it a try!
