Color theory...

I've been thinking a lot about sofas lately and fell in love with this one from Marks & Spencer when I saw it in Living Etc. this month. I usually stick to white walls, but would really like to give another color a go. Maybe even black with a pop of green...hmmmmm. Isn't this hallway (also from Living Etc.) fabulous? I'm not sure that we could pull it off, but I think the formality of the chesterfield would downplay the color a bit. What do you all think? Would you paint a wall in your house black?

The first thing I'm going to do when we get a house is paint a room the darkest shade of charcoal i can find.

If it's good enough for Mick, it should be good enough for everybody else. Paint it black!

I can't believe no one commented on your very dramatic proposal. i love the idea of black, but it can be daunting. I painted my fireplace stone last summer, black green. I was a little nervous, but... I can only remember what my neighbor a very gifted decorator/carpenter said, it's only paint. You can always paint it over. So when my son decided he wanted a red room in our home I did the powder room, thinking it will be a small room to re paint. Well I love it. I'm not sure about a red bedroom, but the powder room is "hot" but black is truly intriguing. I'm thinking of doing my front door black. It's a brave step in a neighborhood of beige and white.

No, don't think I would paint an interior wall black. Maybe a 75% gray would be the deepest I'd go. We've done all white and light gray on our 1st floor. But...
see the next post for my next comment...

we actually just painted our bedroom ceiling black and i love it. the black extends about 6 inches onto the walls too, so at night it disguises the squareness of room. and there is a (nonworking) fire place in the room on a panel extending from the ceiling that is also black and acts as our headboard. the rest of the walls are a super light, almost white blue. as we were finishing up our house rehab, my husband woke up with "a vision" that included a canopy of dozens of strung little white paper lanterns above the bed and below a black ceiling. i have to admit that i had nightmares about our soon to be goth bedroom, but I wanted my husband to see his idea realized, and I really like it. (and i've had a fear of black for atleast 5 years now) we just got all the lanterns in the mail, so it will be fun to see it with lights.

(side note: love the blog! I've never commented before this, but your perspective on art and design is inspiring)

I say go for it. My bedroom is a deep charcoal and I love it (as does everyone who comes to my home). It's unexpected and perfect. I also painted my entry way door a charcoal black chalkboard paint - i love it as well. Everything just looks better when paired with such a dark wall.

I can't wait to see what you do.
